A Life of Courage

[News Reports say that the surrounding towns of Undella Town and Lacunosta Town are experiencing severe drops in temperatures and snowfall, further reports indicate that ice is slowly forming over these towns, origins said to be connected to the Giant Chasm nearby these two locations.]

“That’s pretty odd, It is getting colder, but in Undella Town they’re saying the temperature is around 6 degrees and below…that isn’t normal in this time of year.”

Touya noted while watching the news in his room, he had gotten out of the shower when he had caught the news story on the weird climate change in that area. He had gotten his X-Transceiver off his desk to message Touko and Cheren about it, but both appeared offline.

He decided to leave a video message

“Hey guys. I’ve been wondering if you’ve been seeing the news reports about the weird change in weather over at the Giant Chasm….Kyurem is known to slumber there but it shouldn’t effect the temperature like this at all. Maybe we should head out there and check it out soon?”

He ended the message and sent it, placing his X-Transceiver on his desk again, and looking at the TV lost in thought

…..I hope this isn’t a huge issue…”

“I think I’ll decline. The day may come when I’ll need to do this again,” Mercede crowed. “To make me stop, you’d have to obliterate my entire team first. After all…” She blew a kiss to her Zweilous. “I’m not the only one who enjoys this.”

A Hydreigon would be a challenge for Scylla, perhaps perilously so, but the old lady felt smug and secure in her abilities as a Roman Rules trainer. Again, to date, she had yet to lose a Pokemon.

“How about I tell you where I released the Kyurem?” she proposed. “Considering you beat 100 people to come to me, I won’t let you leave empty-handed. Money’s not the problem, though, is it? You’re probably set.”

But enough dawdling. She’d begin this with a bang. “Go with a Dragon Tail, Scylla. Don’t hold back.” Her wild-minded gift of a Pokemon was all too eager to obey.

“Fight back with Dragon Tail too, Hyde!” he said, pointing straight forward. Hyde roared out.

“You’re not going to take me down so easy, Madame Boss! I will get that info on Kyurem!”

Touya was still a bit flustered about this whole Roman Battling thing, to kill a Pokemon? That wasn’t right to do, it was not in his power to do so.

How would he even get around that?

Touya knew about last years attempt of trying to capture an “equally extraordinary” Pokemon. It was the Genosect that he, Cheren, Hikari and the others had helped her to actually have it within her grasp. He wasn’t so sure if she had known who the Pokedex holders were, but he could not risk their lives in this, he wouldn’t be that careless.

“I’ll take on the Pending Length, then.” he responded “Either way, Madame Boss, you’re going to go down. Once and for all.” he said, his eyes holding a great fire within him, filled with a strive to win. This wasn’t time to make any careless mistakes, this was like another battle with Champion Alder

Only the stakes are higher.

“Ladies first, right?” he said, walking towards the staircase of the pedestal nearest to him, arriving on the top a few moments later.

His mind was already in full on battle mode.

“Thanks for the chivalry, kid,” Mercede crowed mercilessly, grinning like a devil-woman. She reached in her bag for a Pokemon. “Normally, I’d say it’s house rules to let the guest go first, but I’ll humor you. And am I going down today? We’ll see.” She blew more smoke in his direction, as if she were a dragon. “I’m not sure if I should tell you this or not, but I have never lost a Pokemon in a Roman Rules battle, ever.”

Of course, there’d be a first time for everything. She could always lose a Pokemon. To say she never would was different from saying she never had. “I think I’ll show you my birthday present from last year, a species you’re probably all too familiar with.” Her favorite capo surprised her with this darling once, a consolation prize when Kyurem was still out of reach. “Scylla! You’re up!”

Scylla, her Zweilous, roared ferociously with both heads. Her two mouths teemed with razor-sharp, venomous fangs, snarling and growling hungrily. One head threatened to snap at the other one, getting her all the more worked up. “I’ve never had to call Zeus or Mulciber out.” Those two were her oldest, her prize fighters. “Or Naga.” Naga was quite possibly the worst one, a literal man-eater.

Usually, she’d call Kitsune first, but this seemed more fitting. “You’re young, and so is my Zweilous. I’m sure she’ll be enough. Go ahead, then. Call out your first and we’ll get this battle going. One thing first…?”

What now?

“If you manage to kill her, what would you have me do? I can decline, of course, but let’s see just how ambitious you are.”

“…..” He stood there without answer

He couldn’t kill a Pokemon, right?

Right?

“You will stop this type of battling if I win” he said in response. He looked inside his bag, trying to decide what Pokemon he’d use in this battle

His Samurott is his go-to choice, but he was going up against a Zweilous, Samurott only knew Ice Beam to have it to his advantage…and that wasn’t going to cut it for the whole battle. He did also have Hyde, his Hydreigon, the final evolution from Zweilous.

He decided to use that.

“Hyde! C’mon out!” he threw his Pokeball, the ball busting open to reveal a Hydreigon, roaring when it came out, the side heads snapping, ready to fight.

“I guess its a dragon fight then.”

The Mayor laughed, raising both his hands as if this were a stick-up, or Touya was a cop. The way he managed to do is so quickly implied that maybe, just maybe, he’d had some far from good run-ins with the police in his past. “Okay, so I failed to mention that. What are you going to do? Battle me? All I have on me is my Cinccino.”

He stopped laughing the second he realized Mercede wasn’t laughing along. Mercede, however, smiled viciously the moment she saw all that anger on her opponent’s face. Angry opponents fought at their most passionate and she ate that up. Sometimes they’d make tactical errors and strategical mistakes, but she wasn’t about to count on it.

“So what if I caught it?” she asked, continuing to smoke. “I needed it for security. Last year, I tried to get my hands on a Pokemon of equaled magnificence, but a certain mob of Pokedex Holders and other wannabe heroes took that from me, too.” Now, from what she heard, Sird had one of those, and the thought of that insensitive skullscraper having anything along those lines when she herself didn’t—that didn’t make her feel so great.

“Some of the greatest names from my generation helped me capture Kyurem. We made the expedition to Lacunosa Town, waved full-out warfare with the beast, and battled for our lives until, at last, I managed to catch it.” For emphasis, she held up the empty Heavy Ball. “I got a rush from that capture, and knowing that I had the strongest Ice Type to ever exist at my command? What a power trip that gave me! I felt invincible! However…”

The pacing quit. She blew smoke rings into a target shape, pointing the bullseye right at Touya. “Once I got what I wanted from that Pokemon, I set it free. Not all the badges in the world would make it obey me, and were I to keep it any longer, I’d be flirting with the threat of being eaten.”

So, was she messed up, or just abnormally nasty in her disposition? “Mayor, you don’t have to watch us for this fight. I think he’s going to fight with his heart. I like those.” In fact, she’d even offer her hand to shake with this poor kid first. “I used to do that when I was your age,” she whispered.

He didn’t have to be told twice. The moment the Mayor got word from this lady that she’d prefer not to be watched for this battle, he took the next train back to the surface, leaving these two to their own devices.

“Let’s go, for your sake, with a Pending Length,” the Madame Boss suggested. “If you’ve never done a Roman battle before, you’ve never tasted blood. I wouldn’t gamble all six of my Pokemon on my first time. If you’re a hero type, I doubt you would, too.”

She knew all about hero types. Once upon a time, she herself had been one.

Touya knew about last years attempt of trying to capture an “equally extraordinary” Pokemon. It was the Genosect that he, Cheren, Hikari and the others had helped her to actually have it within her grasp. Touya disliked Black City just a bit

The energy around it gave him a bad feeling every time he entered it. He rarely entered the city unless he really had to, say for an errand or just doing some Pokemon training to find some new partners. But, he had heard about some type of Underground, similar to the Battle Subway in Nimbasa City,  but much harder. Or at least the rumors were saying so. The Mayor of Black City was sleek and rich, but that too gave him an “ick” factor to him.

Anyway, he took on the challenge, and surprisingly took on 100 trainers and won each battle. He was worn out, but thank arceus the Mayor let him take a break before challenging this “Mercede” lady that was apparently the ruthless queen of the Underground. He simply went forward to the Metro and took it to the final destination and looked upon Mercede, the lady who stroke fear in this city

Touya could see why she was intimidating, she looked like someone with power, lots of it.

“Oh hello….” he replied to her reaction of him only being a kid, this was usually the reaction to his arrival, he was used to it

“If you don’t mind, please do explain the rules” Touya would be more brash and a bit annoying, but it seemed this time that this would be a very serious battle

“I’m afraid things don’t operate the same way they do above ground,” Mercede explained, taking a few steps closer. She continued to smoke, brazenly ignoring the cue to ask if such things were acceptable. “Mayor, did you explain to him what going underground means? We aren’t the Subway. We aren’t a Gym. We aren’t anything sanctioned by the Pokemon League.”

The mayor laughed to himself, already hoping to place some distance between his own body and hers. “I told him you were the one who was responsible for that Kyurem sighting in Lacunosa Town. I told him—”

“What? That I’d hand over the Kyurem if he defeated me?” Mercede laughed. “I’m afraid, if that’s what you came for, young man, you’ll be sorely disappointed. I no longer have it. The last man I battled down here was casualty enough. So, for the rules…perhaps I should introduce myself first? I am Mercede, formerly known as the Madame Boss of Team Rocket. I happen to be a grand veteran of an old form of battling, which you and I will soon engage in, down here, with either the mayor or no one at all to supervise.”

More lights turned on, the LEDs built into the sides of the brick and steel arena. Two large pedestals were on both sides, covered by spiral staircases. “Roman Rules battling, as it’s often referred to, is the most natural way to have a Pokemon battle. Only people have decided to stop battles upon fainting. Here, we fight as nature intended: to the death.”

To date, she’d never lost a Pokemon. She had her first encounter with the old ways (which, even in her youth, were on the brink of condemnation) at the impressionable age of eleven. That experience was what led her down this long and bloodied path, the path that later designed perhaps the most infamous Pokemon-inspired organized crime family in modern history.

“Now, there’s two ways we do this: full length or pending length. Full length, or as I like to call it, massacre mode, implies that I do my best to mow down your entire six-species team until not a single one of them gets up. Pending length means that whoever has a Pokemon drop first is considered to be the loser and the fight ends there, to spare the other eleven.”

Smoke surrounded her like a veil. “So, which shall it be? You can’t turn your back on me now, young man. You’d hate to fight one hundred locals for nothing, right?”

“W-what? You….captured Kyurem…?” he looked at the mayor, a bit angry. “You never mentioned that at all! Liar!” he pushed pass the mayor, towards Madame Boss. She was the cause of that change around Unova, wasn’t she? To say the least, Touya was pissed.

Then, her rules sunk in, the Roman rules…he had never heard this type of battling, and his blood stopped cold when he heard the words “We fight to the death.” Touya loss focus for just a bit, his mind not really connecting what was going on here, and he was sure he couldn’t get out of this easily…

No wonder she was the leader of Team Rocket, she was ruthless and evil as they come by.

“You are really one messed up lady, aren’t you….Madame Boss” he looked back to the Mayor

“And you, for even endorsing this in the city, you’re lower than scum, you know that?” Touya was truly disgusted by this, how could she….kill someone’s pokemon? And he, he let this all happen. His head swam with so many thoughts, one was to just run away, and let all of this go, but this would still continue, the slaughter of innocent pokemon and in turn, the trainers bond between their own Pokemon.

Now his choices were Full Length or Pending….

The obvious choice would be Pending, but…

“For…Full Length, its basically….a six on six battle, correct?” he asked with a frown, he wasn’t going to enjoy either choice, his gut was telling him to go with Pending, a safer choice, but who honestly knew what this lady would cook up?

He waited for a response before deciding, well, to simply say: fate.

“Wonderful, wonderful. So you managed to defeat 100 of the locals in battle. Allow me to reward your greed! Next time, show me how greedy you really are!” This was the Mayor’s game in Black City, each and every time a powerful Unovian trainer wanted to duke it out in the City of Avarice. He stood about in his fedora, dress suit, and shiny shoes, appearing as the very epitome of wealth and taste.

This boy was a marvel to behold with his record. “So, who was it you said you wanted to challenge this time? Oh…her? You’re ambitious, aren’t you? She’s probably our fiercest fighter in the city! You have quite an eye!”

The mayor patted the outsider on the back and gave him a business card. “Ride our metro all the way across the red line. Show this card to the man on the other end, and you’ll be granted entry to our Underground. She comes by every Saturday night to fight our most ambitious.”

Leaning in, only a little closer, he shared one last thing. “Oh. One word of caution? She isn’t a mere trainer, kid. She’s the devil.”

That goddamn mayor,’ Mercede thought, checking her wristwatch. ‘I bet he’s running his mouth and scaring off the competition.’ Why in the Hell did they reopen this Underground for Black City if no one ever wanted to show up and challenge her? That greedy old man had paid good money to offer an attraction like no other in his city, to compete with a darker tourist clientele than anything neighboring Nimbasa City could offer.

For good clean family fun, Nimbasa was a giant amusement park. For sports, for musicals, for all around merriment for the masses, that neon-lit metropolis sparkled and gleamed with light. Such wasn’t the case for Black City. Here, another type of “fun” could be had, for those who felt the need for aliases and anonymity. No one ever admitted to these pleasures. No one sane, anyway.

“You’re early!” the mayor finally called out, dragging the latest challenger alongside him. “My goodness, you’re early!”

“No,” a woman’s silhouette hissed, icy cold eyes glaring upon the two. The only light aside from those eyes came from the lit butt of a long clove cigarette. “You’re late. Horribly late.”

The voice grew louder as the shadow came closer until a woman stood before the mayor and his guest. Her long gray hair flew about in waves and she sported a bright red coat over black slacks and high-heeled boots. As for an age…? Impossible to tell; the only indicators were that this woman had definitely relied on plastic surgery to try her best to fight natural law.

“Damn, you’re young,” she jeered. “You ever done one of these before? Do I have to explain the rules?”

“I’ve been ok, I guess….I miss you guys! You should come by more often, Cheren! All that work you’re doing must get boring right?”

I think I’ve gotten to the point where I need to work in order to live, as crazy as that is, heh.

But considering this news, I think a visit home is in order—or at least a call home. I do miss you all. I haven’t heard from Belle in a while, actually…

Where are you residing at the moment anyway? Perhaps we should do something this weekend, before I buckle down on all of this, hmm?

“I’m just at home, that’s all! There hasn’t been much going on lately…except this weird change in weather, but maybe it’s just here at home…?”

“That would be great! I’m sure Touko would love to see you…if she isn’t busy with work though.”

N is gone again…

“Me and Touko are really worried about him….” he sighed

“It’s not really the same without him, you know. I mean…sometimes I wouldn’t understand what he said or meant, but he still cared for both of us. And we really care for him”

“Maybe…Touko and I should go looking for him this time, hm?”
